KISMET Lore dump: with mana being such a readily available energy source in the Perseus system, most electronics are powered using batteries which capture and store the environment's ambient mana.  For travelers who often find themselves in mana-poor locales, batteries made with etherite are essential, as they provide a near-inexhaustible energy source in the absence of ambient mana.  However, etherite batteries are significantly less efficient, and are unable to reliably power energy-intensive equipment.  In recent decades, scientists developed power cells made with pure ether that rival--and potentially even surpass--using ambient mana as an energy source.  Unfortunately, the danger involved in both the production and handling of these power cells makes them inaccessible to all but the wealthiest of organizations.
